Which VR headset to buy: Games, pricing, and best reviews

Gamers in the VR sphere all want immersive gaming experiences. But what started as an early market with one or two VR headset options has exploded into options from big brands like Meta and Samsung, all the way down to some emerging brands.

Which ones are worth the money? It all comes down to feature specs, cost, and available games.

Let’s break this ish down.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • The Meta Quest 2

  • The Meta Quest Pro

  • Pico 4

Meta Quest 2

The original Meta Quest got an upgrade in this sharper, more affordable, latest iteration of the product.

Price:

128 GB version: $399 USD

256 GB version: $499 USD

Resolution: 1832 x 1920

Pros:

  • Controllers have improved battery life

  • Better resolution and processor than the original version

  • Massive available game library

  • Lightweight

  • Easy to use

  • Fully wireless

  • Better social and sharing capabilities

  • Optional PC tethering with the help of an accessory cable

Cons:

  • Must link it with your Facebook account to use

  • Short battery life (maximum of 2-3 hours)

  • No dedicated headphones

Meta Quest Pro

Priced on a little higher side of the VR spectrum, Meta Quest Pro has been a much awaited release among the gamer community. Although its price tag is much higher, it has improved technology that makes it a higher performance VR headset.

Price: $1,499.99 USD

Resolution: 1920 x 1800

Pros:

  • More comfortable fit than the Meta Quest 2

  • Improved design

  • Eye and face tracking

  • Built-in speakers with spatial sound

  • Wireless charging dock

  • Excellent interior and exterior sensors

  • Better battery life

Cons:

  • A lot more money for mostly performance-based feature improvements

  • A little bit heavy

  • Does not have a lot of optimized apps right now

  • Understanding the scene can get a bit difficult in cluttered rooms

Pico 4

Pico’s VR headsets are notorious for being headsets with higher performance than Meta’s products at competitive pricing, and the Pico 4 doesn’t disappoint. The biggest downside to the Pico 4 though is a hard one to overcome: it has a much more limited available games library than Meta does.

Price:

128 GB: $425 USD

256 GB: $492 USD

Resolution: 2160 x 2160

Pros:

  • 4K+ resolution

  • Comfortable to use for longer periods

  • Full color pass through

  • 105° field of view

  • Automatic interpupillary distancing

  • Balanced weight

Cons:

  • No headphones jack

  • No wired streaming function

  • Smaller available games library than Meta products

  • Mixed reality features are not up to full potential
